May Topic: NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH

This month we look at our final and eternal DESTINY

What does the Bible say Heaven will be like and who gets in?

Revelation 21:27

ONLY THOSE WHOSE NAMES ARE WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE

In Luke 10 Jesus made a dramatic statement when the 72 returned from their "missionary" trip to report that even the demons submitted to them in Jesus name.

He replied "I saw satan fall like lightning from Heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions, to overcome all the power of the enemy, nothing will harm you." But He added, "However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in Heaven."

I think we overlook that - particularly those of us who fellowship in Pentecostal/Charismatic circles. We rejoice in the spectacular evidences of the power of God rather than the greatest event of all - names being written in the Book of Life.

Jesus was reminding the disciples, yet again, that the angels rejoice over one sinner who repents. There is a lot of theological discussion over when one becomes converted. Various Scriptures are propounded to support the various sides but it does appear to be more than just a mental ascent.

Jesus is emphatic that we "do" the works of repentance - which was why He rejoiced when Zaacheus was "converted". He "did" repentance. He was not just "sorry" for what he had done - he made restitution and more. How often we see a shallow "repentance" followed by a shallow "walk".

If Heaven itself depends entirely on our names being written in the Book of Life, it seems sensible to me that we make sure our names are there above all else. The Hebraic idea of salvation was not a "ticket" to Heaven but a lifestyle worked out everyday.

That takes nothing at all away from the fact that we are saved by grace and grace alone - but it does mean that I become a servant, a slave of the Son of God - not just a "buddy". Jesus is the awesome God and the sooner we realise the implications of that the better. As Paul says "what counts is a new creation". All the religiosity, all the words, all the works, all the acclamation will account for nothing unless our name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

A watershed is coming as surely as the next dawn.

Tell me, are you sure your name is written in the Book of Life?

If it is, you will be welcomed into eternal peace and joy beyond description!

If you are not sure, do something about it today, so that you know for sure before you go to sleep tonight!
