THE RIVER OF THE WATER OF LIFE
How often we read Scripture and yet don't "see" what is written there.
We need the Holy Spirit's quickening or illumination from someone who knows a bit about the Jewish culture of the time of Christ. Then we suddenly see that what Jesus said was dynamite and incredibly significant at the time.
Such happened to me with John 7. We read verses 37 - 40 and they seem great but immerse them in the "life" of the Feast of Tabernacles and the result is mind-blowing.
Jesus waits for the height of the celebrations and the very moment the High Priest is pouring out the water over the altar to cry out "If a man is thirsty let him come to Me and drink ... (and) streams of living water will flow from within him".
You celebrate the water in the desert - I am the water of life. I will not give an exhaustive supply - I will give you abundant rivers. He was saying in effect - I am Messiah - I am Almighty God. The crowd, all those who lived within the 12-mile radius of Jerusalem would have heard His declaration. No wonder John records the people debated as to who Jesus was!
The Jews know how to celebrate. They know they are God's chosen people. Jesus had chosen the moment of their highest celebration to reveal His deity for the first time in public.
God also loves a celebration. The angels celebrated Creation; the Messiah's birth; the repentance of every sinner and the new birth of every Christian.
However, the culmination of all celebrations for God and man is the marriage of the Lamb. Out of that marriage celebration will flow the River of the Water of Life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb, down the middle of the great street of the City. The Lamb is the water of Life in all its fullness, and it flows from Him as a river.
You and I will get to celebrate to a degree never known before and beyond words.
