January Topic: OBEDIENCE IS GREATER THAN SACRIFICE |
Of all the things I have had to learn over the length of my lifetime - this is the most important. If we don't get this right, the rest is impossible. So let's spend this first month of the year getting our priorities in the correct order. |
Matthew 7:24
EVERYONE WHO HEARS THESE WORDS OF MINE & PUTS THEM INTO PRACTICE
How often we deceive ourselves, don't we!
We "translate" this verse so that it says, "everyone who hears these words of mine, is like a wise man - and everyone who does not hear these words is like a foolish man".
But that is NOT what the word of God says. The foolish man is the one who "knows it all" BUT DOES NOT PUT IT INTO PRACTICE.
Jesus was not just a good teacher; someone you listen to and sieve out what you dislike and accept the rest. He is not someone to whom you listen and say, "oh that's nice isn't it!" and then go on your own merry way regardless. No, Jesus is not just a good teacher - He is the Son of God and He expects us to follow His teaching and put it into practice.
Did you know, that you only really believe what you live out? The rest is just a sham or just hypocrisy! I was talking to someone the other day and he said he was reading Matthew and loving it. I replied that I don't enjoy Matthew - in fact I'd prefer to be able to say that I hadn't read it because if I admit to having read it, I can be challenged by "then why don't you put it into practice?" Ow, I don't like that!
I was reading once about a church fellowship that became very concerned. Each week they had more and more great teaching, and so their heads were full of knowledge but there was still something missing. In the end the Pastor said, "Okay, from now on we will have the same teaching every week until we put it into practice. Once and only once we are actually living the truth will we go on to a new one".
That takes courage doesn't it! And yet how many of us have the privilege of being fed really well each week, but it doesn't really change our lives. We just store it up in our "knowledge banks" and we wonder why we don't change our own lifestyle let alone the society in which we live.
We all tinker with the machine, which has gone wrong until facing total frustration and failure we pick up the handbook. Following the handbook, the repair is swift!
Oh, that we would realise that if we all "followed THE HANDBOOK" of our lives and put it into practice, not only would our lives be changed but our society would be changed also.
