HE REGARDED DISGRACE FOR THE SAKE OF CHRIST AS OF GREATER VALUE THAN THE TREASURES OF EGYPT
What sort of values system is that?
Moses is a "prince" of the court of Pharaoh. He has all the potential of a real prince; money, power, privilege, authority, riches and everything he could wish for. And yet he threw it away - he renounced it. Why?
Surely he could have changed the system from the inside? He knew how the system worked; he knew the "players", so why throw it all away? And what for? A motley - rebellious, stiff-necked bunch of Hebrew slaves! Why bother?
How many times the enemy must have thrown these questions and emotions at Moses for the rest of his life! But Moses was made of sterner stuff. He was a man of destiny. You cannot be meek without a destiny and he had decided he would inherit the earth!
He saw the contrast between the pleasures of sin and the eternal reward that is the destiny of God's people, and realised that the difference is vast, beyond description and totally motivating.
In Scripture, Egypt is a picture of the world. How far into Egypt have you been drawn? Have you been tempted by all the treasures of Egypt and its pleasures? In the parable of the sower, the thorns choke the seed. What are the thorns? The illusion of riches! The pleasures of sin and the treasures of Egypt are temporary.
Oh yes, they may stay with you for your 70-year life span - but then what? Where will they go then? Where will you go? Naked we came into the world and naked we leave! Will you enjoy the treasures of Egypt or will you endure disgrace for the sake of Christ?
Yes, I noticed that too. Moses by faith "knew Christ" well before the Passover or the burning bush. His real "Mum" had brought him up well!
But he still had to make the choice. Jesus also had to make the choice. Leave the glory of Heaven, come to earth and die on the Cross for our sakes or stay where He was and let us "rot in hell".
Which will you choose? The illusion of riches and pleasures of sin or disgrace for the sake of Christ?
You can't have both!
