August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth

We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now.

Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him.

Revelation 2:17

TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES I WILL GIVE ...HIDDEN MANNA; A WHITE STONE AND A NEW NAME

PERGAMUM - (Overcoming - error)

Everything about the letters to the Churches is pregnant with meaning, and may I encourage you to do some extra study in this area.

It will suffice for us today, to know that Pergamum was where satan had his throne. The reference here can apply to various things, but I shall just mention the fact that, being the centre of the Roman Administration for Asia, it became the centre also for the worship of Caesar. To the first century Christians, there was nothing more satanic.

Notice that Antipas was not only a witness but also a martyr. To the Christians of the day the two went hand in hand. Aren't you glad you didn't live then?

However, there were those who tried to live two lives, with their feet in both camps. (Just like today!). A Christian, when amongst Christians, and a conformer to the world when to do otherwise would be inconvenient, or embarrassing, if not fatal. The Church had allowed that error to subtly affect their behaviour.

Therefore to him who overcomes is given: -

The "manna", of course, relates to the Heavenly food (bread), but also to Jesus - the Bread of Life that came down from Heaven. So the overcomer is given "Christ Himself".

A white stone and a new name. Again the white stone could refer to a variety of things but I like the one, which the gladiators were given with letters S.P. on it. It stood for a man "whose valour had been proved beyond doubt."

The new name could refer to a new status just like Abram became Abraham, Jacob became Israel and Saul became Paul. Recognition of a new status in God.We have a choice - will we overcome error - stand up for Jesus regardless of the circumstances and inconvenience? Or be "situational" Christians who like one foot in the boat and one foot on the wharf.

It's make-your-mind-up time!

If we stay 'sold out' for Jesus then, for each of one of us is the promised white stone - the new name- and Christ Himself.

What more could you wish for?

Or, will you, not stand up for Jesus, and end up in the 'drink'?
