March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Matthew 27:4
LET GOD RESCUE HIM NOW IF HE WANTS HIM
I think this is the most awful comment in the whole of Scripture.
Who did they think they were? They were there standing in judgement on the Holy Spotless Lamb of God.
These are the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders. The religious leaders. Those people to whom God had entrusted his Church and here they are standing in judgement of the Son of God, the Bridegroom of the Church, the one before whom every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess Jesus Christ is Lord.
What ignorant arrogance! What insensitive blasphemy! What blatant pride!
How would you feel if you were God?
This is Your Son they are talking about! This is the One of whom You have just told His disciples - this is My One and Only Son in whom is all My delight!
How would you feel? I know what I would do - as a father. I would take my son back to myself and "zap" those men so that they would never breathe again.
What did Father do? Nothing? No, I don't think He did nothing - He looked on and let His heart and His Son's heart be broken. Shortly afterwards He heard His Son's cry "My God, My God why have you forsaken me?"
I do not believe that at that point God went away and hid. Neither do I believe He turned a deaf ear towards His son. I believe God the Father was being "pro active". I believe that at that very moment He was "seeing His Son's victory".
He was actively "supporting" His Son through His deepest experience, knowing that if He dared intervene, His plan would have been ruined and satan would have won.
BUT SATAN LOST!
Yes, he threw all he could at God. He tormented God's Son, yes, but he also tormented Father through these and other insults and accusations.
BUT FATHER DID NOT GIVE IN. God is so much more vast than satan, and His love is far greater than satan's pride and evil. God absorbed it and more and won the victory in the face of defeat!
No, it wasn't a case of God not wanting His Son, but a case of wanting many sons like Him, which would have been impossible had He stepped in at the prompting and taunting of evil men!
