March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Deuteronomy 21:23
ANYONE WHO IS HUNG ON A TREE IS CURSED
The agonies of Jesus were far more than we can ever grasp.
Isaiah says that as you look at Jesus on the cross you will find that His body is so contorted, so disfigured, so beaten, and in so much pain, you can hardly recognise it as a body of a man!
He was scourged; He was beaten; they plaited a crown made of sharp thorns and forced it onto His head until the blood ran down His cheeks. They slapped Him around the face - they spat at Him and they pulled the hair out of His beard. They hammered nails through His hands and thrust a spear into His side.
But in many ways, those were just on the surface.
Then, there were the Spiritual agonies. Betrayed by His friend, denied by His disciple, and forsaken by the rest. The hysteria of the masses had gone against Him, the spiritual rulers ganged up against Him. The full forces of satan marshalled and were let loose upon Him. Add to that, the fact that Father stood by in silence.
All those could still have happened without Jesus being crucified on a cross.
But, yes the cross it was. Why? Because we were under the curse of God and the only effective way He could remove the curse from us, was to become cursed, to bear the curse, on our behalf.
Every aspect of Jesus' death has meaning.
It means that no one in any ethnic group can ever say that Jesus doesn't identify with me and my needs.
It also means that there is no aspect of my natural, emotional, physical, psychological, or spiritual life, or any other need that has not been fully dealt with by the cross of Jesus Christ.
We were all under the Curse of God. Heading for that final event; the Wrath of God being poured out on us.
BUT He bore the punishment of the Curse for us, so that we are "saved" from God's Wrath.
Yes, He had to be hung on a tree - It happened at Golgotha! (At Calvary!)
