August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth |
We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now. Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him. |
Revelation 3:21
TO HIM WHO OVERCOMES I WILL GIVE THE RIGHT TO SIT ON MY THRONE<
LAODICEA - (Overcoming - indifference)
He, who has an ear, let him hear. That is an open invitation!
It is not just for an exclusive some but an inclusive all. Each of the Letters ends that way, so I believe it is important to meditate and ponder on that now at the end of August. Do you have ears to hear? Have you heard what the Spirit of God has been saying to you through this month, and particularly through the last seven days? What has He said to YOU? Did you make a note of it? Have you done anything about it? Can I encourage you to DO something about it before we start September? Then "check up" to see that you do it as well!
Indifference - that was the trouble with the Church at Laodicea. The opposite of "love" is not "hate" it is indifference. If people are against you, or hate you, you soon realise it and can find out why, do something about it or at least reason with them about it. If they are "on fire"/ "sold out" to Jesus, that too, is tremendous. But indifference is the worst. Try as hard as you may, you are hitting your head against a brick wall.
What causes indifference? Arrogance, self-satisfaction, and cynicism. Thinking you know it all! The true follower of Jesus knows that he is only a pilgrim on a journey with so much still to learn of the ways of God.
The Laodiceans were so "rich" they didn't need anyone else's help or God's. Even when the city was destroyed, they rebuilt it themselves without outside aid. Independence is not of God. He has made us inter-dependent upon the other members of His Body.
They had the best wool in the known world - so were well clothed, but it didn't hide the nakedness of their souls.
Their medics had found a highly successful eye-salve, but it couldn't heal their spiritual blindness.
Having no water in their soil, it had to be brought in via a six-mile-long underground aqueduct. By then, their own drinking water was lukewarm and tepid, and reminded them of the hot pools across the River Lycus at Hierapolis where the water was nauseating to the taste and would be spat out!
To him who overcomes - indifference- is given the right to sit on My throne with Me. No, not in the place of Jesus, but with Him. Thrones in those days were more like a couch, so there was room for the victor to sit beside the Emperor. There is room to sit beside The Victor, for us too - if we are prepared to overcome.
Are we? Are you? You will have to become "sold-out" for Jesus! It will take courage, humility, determination, and perseverance. BUT isn't it worth it - for the Prize(s) of the Overcomer?
Isn't Jesus worth it, too, any way?
Come on - let's stir one another on to overcome right until the end!
