August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth |
We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now. Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him. |
Revelation 3:12
HIM WHO OVERCOMES I WILL MAKE A PILLAR... I WILL WRITE ON HIM THE NAME OF MY GOD
PHILADELPHIA - (Overcoming - 'giving up')
Philadelphia was a city built on three borders, and set up to be a missionary of Greek culture three centuries before this letter was written. Now it was to be a missionary to the "Good News" of the Risen Christ.
Though fertile, it was situated in an active volcanic area and earthquakes and tremors were common and some times fatal. Most of the population ended up living outside of the city in huts, because the city itself was cracked throughout and falling masonry was a daily occurrence.
To be a pillar in the Temple was a promise indeed. The Apostles Peter, James and John were pillars in the early church (Gal 2:9). A pillar stands regardless of circumstances and is sure and certain.
"Never again will you leave it." Now the insecurity of coming and going would cease. Here he would relax in peace forever. Not only that, but his character, which can be volatile at best, will be fixed and set in stone in holiness and righteousness.
"The Name of My God." In Asia Minor and Philadelphia, when a priest died after a lifetime of faithful service, men honoured him by erecting a new pillar in the temple and inscribing his name and his father's name upon it as a lasting honour. Christ will do that, in Heaven, for His faithful ones. It may also allude to the bonding of a slave. God will put His mark on His faithful ones, which will be an unmistakable badge of God's favour.
The "New Jerusalem" - the gift of citizenship to the City of God. Ezekiel tells us that the City's new name is "The Lord is there." The overcomers will be citizens of the City where God's Presence is always there.
"My New Name" - Philadelphia new all about new names. In AD17 an earthquake devastated it and in recognition of the gifts from the Emperor to rebuild it, they called it Neocaesarea - the New City of Caesar. Later Vaspasian was kind to them and so they changed the name to Flavia, the family name of Vespasian. To the overcomers the Lord Jesus Christ will give His New Name! It will be a badge to share in both His gifts and His ultimate triumph.
What did the Philadelphian church folk have to overcome? Giving up! The need to keep going regardless and never to give up even if everything is falling down around your ears and eyes!
Do you feel like that? Is it really worth it? Can I really cope any more? Is there security anywhere?
Hey, carry on and hang in there. The future is secured. Jesus Christ has triumphed and His overcomers will share in that final victory too! You will also receive the very same rewards!
