But, we are saved by grace!
Yes, but now we are saved, it is not a question of sitting back and waiting to go to Heaven - if it was, we might as well die now! No, there is work to be done. We have been called to be His witnesses and to make disciples.
It is therefore important that we go out of our way to learn and study as much as we can. Get hold of a good concordance and some good Bible commentaries. Christian books can be useful, but don't neglect the Word of God! As someone remarked to me recently - Christian books are good but they are really only watered down versions of the real thing. I tend to agree. Also remember, they are man's thoughts and we need God's thoughts. I admit I have benefited by them, but my greatest lessons, my greatest development and my greatest satisfaction has been found in studying the Bible for myself with the aid of the Holy Spirit.
I do have to say though for those of us who do not live in Israel or have a Jewish heritage, it is invaluable to either, preferably go there, or at least study books which describe Jewish culture, particularly those at the time of Jesus on earth, as it helps us have a greater understanding of why Jesus said what He said and why He said it when He did.
Some of you will also want to go on to study NT Greek and Hebrew. The rest of us can cheat by getting a good computer software programme! There is, however, no substitute for studying the Word of God and meditating on it.
If you are to represent Him faithfully, you need to know His Word and to know where to find those frequently quoted passages - memorise as much as you can too. With a concordance or chain reference Bible you can pick a word and follow its development throughout the Bible and it is very interesting and a good way to start and you may even find you get hooked!
Jesus wants maturing disciples. It's up to us to present ourselves to God as one approved - so He can entrust the task to us!
Don't forget the most effective way to learn, is actually to put it into practise and then to teach and disciple someone else!
