March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Genesis 3:21
THE LORD GOD MADE GARMENTS OF SKIN
It's almost a throw away remark isn't it?
In verse 7, it says that Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves, because they realised they were naked.
The Lord God found these inadequate. Why? Because He knew they were insubstantial; they would wear out very quickly; because the leaves would die, become brittle and useless; and because fig trees are deciduous and eventually they would run out of leaves? Skins as we know are very hard wearing and would last much longer.
That must be why.
That would indeed be part of it I'm sure but I believe there is more to it than that.
How do you get to use skins? They don't grow on trees and most animals don't just give them to you for the sheer fun of it. Why? Because an animal has to die to give you its skin.
Mankind was apparently completely vegetarian until after the flood. Genesis 9:3 says, "just as I gave you the green plants (for food) I now give you everything." (Everything that lives and moves).
There had been no deaths. This is the first recorded death in Scripture and it happens because Adam and Eve took of the tree they were told not to eat. Here is the first "sacrifice". An animal dies so that the Lord God can cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve.
An animal sacrifice follows man's sin. So it continued in Leviticus. A lamb as a sin offering. So for us, the Lamb of God is our sin offering.
Do you see how it goes all the way back to Genesis 3:21. Adam and Eve rebelled against God, and God accepted the sacrifice of the animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve.
Yes, they were not only physically naked, but they were now also spiritually naked and that demanded a blood sacrifice before a Holy God.
God arranged the sacrifice for them, just as God arranged the sacrifice for us.
