March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Genesis 4:4
THE LORD LOOKED WITH FAVOUR ON ABEL
Abel must have been a man of God!
In fact the writer of Hebrews tells us that in chapter 11:4: By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings.
Read Genesis 4:3 & 4 again and I believe we can get a glimpse of why. Cain "brought SOME of the fruits". Abel "brought FAT PORTIONS from some of the FIRST BORN".
I believe this is the main difference. Cain must have known that he should be thankful to God, but he wasn't inclined to do it, so out of "sufferance" he just "went through the motions". Abel also knew but he had a totally different heart attitude.
What can I give God who has given so much to me? Well I can, at least, give him some of my first-born but I don't want to give him "normal ones". I want to give him "fat" ones. Give him my best.
What is your attitude to offerings? Oh, I'll give a tenth if I really must - a tenth of what I've got left! Or, well that's my tithe, now what can I give God? How can I further His Kingdom? How can I bless His people?
The amount is irrelevant - remember the widow's mite, which Jesus "exalted"?
Paul reminds us, God loves an hilarious giver. Are you one?
Oh, how much joy there is to be had if we would give and give with the "right attitude".
Then you turn from money and consider time and talent - do you give those gladly too?
Does God look with favour on you?
But who told Abel about "sacrifices"?
This is only the second reference to a sacrifice in the Bible - we saw the first one yesterday.
Somehow Abel must have "discerned" the need of a sacrifice to enter the presence of God and find His favour.
By faith and prophetically, he showed what was to follow -
The sacrifice of Jesus Christ God's Son.
