WHOEVER SERVES ME MUST FOLLOW ME
Of course I'll follow Jesus! That's what Christianity is all about, isn't it?
Yes it is! It is a life of service! Too many Christians today, seem to view the verse the other way round though. Life is great. I have Jesus wherever I go and He has promised never to leave me nor forsake me. He is going to answer all my needs and from now on there is no looking back. The poor, insignificant past is gone, from now on it's Me and Jesus and He will give me all my hearts desires. Everything is mine in Christ Jesus.
Most of that is true, of course, but there seems to me to be one fundamental flaw. I am called to follow Jesus - not for Jesus to follow me!
I remember vividly an experience I had some years ago when I was on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. I had been almost surrounded by those so called "name it, claim it" Christians and I was disturbed in my spirit, because all I sensed was, that a lot of dear folk were coming into condemnation, through what I considered, was no fault of their own.
Jesus didn't come to condemn. He came to set people free. As I walked up this hill overlooking Peel Harbour, I felt the Lord say to me:
"Do you want to follow Jesus?" "Yes Lord", I replied.
"Jesus had no home - do you still want to follow Him?"
"Foxes have holes and the birds of the air nests but the Son of Man had no where to lay His head. Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
"He had no earthly possessions. Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
"He had few friends. Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
"The religious people (who should have welcomed Him) rejected Him. Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
"His followers misunderstood Him. His disciples forsook Him except for two. One denied Him and the other betrayed Him. Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
"He was arrested, falsely accused, mocked and beaten. Do you still want to follow Jesus? Finally He was given a crown of thorns and crucified - Do you still want to follow Jesus?"
Not very easy, cosy or prosperous, was it?
"Whoever serves Me, must Follow Me!"
