NEITHER CAN YOU BEAR FRUIT UNLESS YOU REMAIN IN ME
To me it's very simple and straightforward. If I "give my life" to Christ, then from that moment on, my will is submitted to the Lordship, total authority of Jesus Christ.
That doesn't mean I'm perfect, in any way, but to the best of my human ability I try and walk with Jesus on a daily basis - not just by reading the Bible and praying, although they are important, but even more as two friends walking and talking together working alongside each and enjoying each other's company.
How strange it is to me, therefore, when I meet Christians who find it very difficult to talk about Him or even have any desire to spend time with Him. And yet at the same time, so often they are the same ones who want to be spiritually "accepted", or famous, or seek "responsible positions in the Church".
Conversely, though I am made very sad by it, I am nevertheless not surprised by it, when I find they are the ones who constantly seek approval, spiritual counsel and guidance from others.
I guess half the trouble is the age in which we live. It's a pill related society. If I have a problem, no matter what it is, it seems there is a pill to fix it. Whether it is for my physical health, my emotional health, or just to stop cramping my social life!
Long haul commitment is a vulgar intrusion on my existence to be avoided at all costs, and a long-term marriage must mean you are either totally boring or weak willed. Even the word "remain" conjures up all sorts of unwelcome commitment.
I am a free spirit; I don't want to "remain" anywhere! I mean if I thought God wanted me to remain somewhere, I would have to have serious second thoughts about this Christianity thing!
Do you want to be fruitful? Then "remain" in Me. Christianity is not a thing, nor is Jesus a "pill" you take just before going to Church or before another fundamental Christian arrives at your door! Christianity is a relationship, a loving deepening relationship that grows as it lengthens.
What sort of witness can you be if you don't remain in Him? Certainly not one that bears fruit!
Do you wish to be thrown away and burnt, or to produce fruit? The choice is yours!
