Psalm 103:10
HE DOES NOT TREAT US AS OUR SINS DESERVE
Hallelujah for that!
Just try and imagine what would happen if He did! If our righteousnesses are as filthy rags in the sight of God as He says in Isaiah - fit only for throwing away to be burned, how much more devastating would it be to receive the true reward for our sins.
"The soul that sins shall die" - that is the decree from The Throne. Paul reminds us that the wages of sin is death. Death, God's Holy Wrath and Hell are the rewards for our sin - that is how God would justly treat us "as our sins deserve."
It is recorded that Pilate said of Jesus "He has done nothing deserving death." No, we had done that, but nevertheless, Jesus was led out to die - the sinless for the sinful. None other was good enough. No-one else could help, rescue or save us.
BUT JESUS DID.
Here David was doing two things. He was prophetically looking forward to the day when the Lamb of God would become the Perfect Sacrifice and pay the ultimate price to deal with sin once and for all. The debt, the wages had to be paid, for God doesn't overlook sin, He deals with it - but God would take the price 'on His own head.'
David was also giving us a glimpse of the heart of God. No, God didn't become love in Jesus; He didn't start loving His disobedient creatures when Jesus died on the cross, or indeed only after Jesus had died on the cross. Far from it! GOD IS LOVE! The heart of the Father received full expression in the life of the Son, but the heart of God initially devised the plan of salvation in the first place.
Only He could come up with the plan because He had already established 'the rules' and those 'rules' could never be broken - not even for or by love. So the plan was to 'satisfy the rules', so that justice would be done and seen to be done - so that holiness and righteousness could blossom as a garden and bloom in all their purity and splendour.
NO! He doesn't treat us, as our sins deserve, because He has already done that in Jesus, His Son.
He knew we would never 'make it' on our own. But His Son did and therefore now He doesn't even need to treat us as our sins deserve, for the price has been paid, once and for all.
Hallelujah!
