August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth

We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now.

Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him.

1 John 3:9

NO-ONE WHO IS BORN OF GOD WILL CONTINUE TO SIN

That's a challenge, isn't it?

Did you realise that or do you think it is only 'natural' for a Christian to sin?

Well, it isn't! It shouldn't be, anyway. Oh yes, none of us is perfect, but there is a process called sanctification, which, if effective in our lives, will start to reduce our propensity to sin. Sanctification is neither instantaneous nor passive. Just because you become a Christian doesn't mean you stop sinning over night! You've noticed that, haven't you?

But, when you become a child of God, He gives you His Holy Spirit to indwell, live within, you. He takes up residence once we invite Him in. He is the One who has the power to overcome sin and the evil one. However, as has been said, the Holy Spirit is a gentleman. That means that He doesn't domineer; He doesn't force His will on us; but He will operate in our lives in direct correlation with the amount of authority we 'allow and give' Him. If you ask Him to 'clean up' your life, He will start to do so, but He can only continue to do so as long as you let Him. Once you say, "that's enough I can't handle/don't want any more" He stops.

Sanctification is not passive. It won't 'just happen'. You have to be active in the process. If you don't guard your eyes, your ears, your mind and your tongue, sanctification can't and won't take place. You can't continue to fill your mind with all the rubbish in the media, in print, on computers, on Internet, in video games and TV and expect sanctification to take place simultaneously - that's nonsense. There is a saying often used in the computer arena which says "Garbage in equals garbage out."

It applies equally well to our minds!

Why not take a few minutes to review what you have filled your mind with over the last few days and resolve to exclude the unhelpful over the next days and weeks.

For, if you fill your mind with the Word of God, and those things that are beautiful and of good report (Phil 4:8) then sanctification will begin to take place.

And you will find that even you will not continue to sin.
