Song of Songs 4:7
All beautiful you are, my darling; there is no flaw in you.
FAULTLESS.
Yesterday, because of His unconditional love, we were taken into our Saviour’s banquet hall to be given all His spiritual blessings. Today, He wants you to know how much He loves you – not for what you have done but just for who you are.
As we get to know the Lord more and more, there arises within us a greater and greater love for Him. Not just for what He has done either – although it is totally beyond description and inexhaustible in love – but more importantly – for who He is.
This is natural enough when we consider that the Eternal, Holy, Omnipotent God loved us so much that He sent His One and Only Perfect and Spotless Son of God to die for us, even when we didn’t care a stuff about Him. We then begin to recognise how blessed we are that the One who did all this is not a fierce, angry, judgmental schoolmaster, nor an impassive block of wood, iron or stone, nor an ugly ogre but the intimate, relational, pure, kind, loving and merciful Heavenly Father.
In fact, this chapter shows us what Jesus thinks of us, which is quite incredible.
Yes, I know it reads how a husband should view his wife and I encourage all of you who are husbands to read this chapter in minute detail and relate it to your wife and then go and enjoy her, but it also describes how Jesus loves His Bride, the Church. (See also Ephesians 5:25–33.)
Now notice how the verses get very intimate and we need to realise that our bodies are basically and naturally beautiful, pure and wholesome. The enemy may have done all he can to degrade and misuse every reference to physical intimacy – but God made it pure and wholesome, innocent of evil and degradation, and as Christians, we can get back to that position through the victory Jesus won for us at the Cross of Calvary. At the Cross, He won back all we lost through Adam in the Garden (see Genesis 3:7 and compare 2:25).
Also notice in this passage how he appears to discover her inch by inch. We need to do the same. For when as husbands we learn to appreciate and love our wives in the same way, we are blessed because our relationship becomes increasingly beautiful, exciting, intimate and strong.
As we grow in our tenderness to and admiration for our wives and learn to express that to them, our wives will feel special, appreciated and respond by being even more receptive to us. Our love for each other will grow and our marriage will become both incredibly secure and extremely precious.
But realise this. Just in the same way – Jesus knows and loves you.
Every inch of you. Isn’t that wonderful?
Now learn to enjoy that incredible relationship even more. (Now read Jude 24–25.)
