Jeremiah 23:5-6

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In His days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the Name by which He will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness.”

Jehovah Tsidkenu.

This has yet to be fulfilled. Part of this is what the religious leaders were looking for in Jesus’ days on earth. They were looking for a king. A king who would save Judah and Israel – release them from Roman oppression and set them free. Someone who would establish Israel as the greatest nation in the world once and for all and reveal His power and give them credibility.

The problem was that the Redeemer had to come first. “The Lord Our Righteousness” had to be established first. Why? Because, we like them, need a Saviour. As we saw, “We all, like sheep, have gone astray” (Isaiah 53:6). We’ve all gone our own way and in order to come back to God, we desperately need a Saviour. Our best is simply not good enough for a Holy God. We all know we fail and miss the mark. Even our best, our righteousness, is usually tainted with pride, arrogance or condescension. (See also Isaiah 64:6.)

No, we need a greater righteousness. That can come only through David’s “Righteous Branch”. Yes, this David is King David – the king with a heart after God. The “Branch” is from the family tree. Great David’s Greater Son – Jesus.

Both Matthew and Luke give us the run-down on Jesus’ ‘natural’ line – but as He was God, He was born of a virgin by Holy Spirit conception. That retained His sinlessness and He thus showed Himself to be the “Righteous Branch”. He was not tainted with Adam’s sin from the Fall, nor did He succumb to sin during His life on earth. (See also 2 Corinthians 5:21 & 1 Peter 2:22.)

That means that His death was indeed the spotless sacrifice required by God and through His resurrection we know two things:

1. Jesus was spotless and
2. God had accepted the sacrifice.

Therefore, when we accept Christ as our Saviour and accept His perfect Sacrifice on our behalf, we receive and are ‘covered by’ His righteousness. We give over ours to receive His, and by that transaction He becomes “The Lord OUR Righteousness.”

Isn’t that terrific? Wait, there is more. That part of the prophetic Scripture is fulfilled. Therefore, we know one day the rest will be too. He is coming back as King to reign, both on earth, for a while (1,000 years), and then in Heaven forever (see Revelation 20:1-6).

What a prospect. I can’t wait, can you?
