Jeremiah 25:15
This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from My hand this cup filled with the wine of My wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.”
That is the sentence.
That is the judgement of Almighty God, which is even more irreversible than the laws of the Medes and Persians, which we came across in Esther. This is the judgement, the sentence, will and penalty of Almighty God. It has not changed. It is not just for Israel and Judah but for all nations – that also means you and me, for none is exempt.
What arrogance is seen in people today as they mock the Living God. Who do they think they are? Just because the sentence has not yet been fully carried out doesn’t mean it won’t be. Just as surely as the angel of death went throughout Egypt, so shall “this CUP” go through “all the nations.”
Similarly, only those who have the ‘Sign of Blood’ over them will see “this CUP” pass over them too. What is that ‘Sign of Blood’? What is “this CUP”? How can things be changed? If the sentence is from the Almighty God and cannot be changed, what hope is there for anyone? (See also Revelation 16-18.)
Outside of Jesus there is none. But Jesus drank “this CUP” dry. When He was in the Garden of Gethsemane, He ‘saw’ “this CUP” and then He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this CUP be taken from Me” (Matthew 26:39) and again, “My Father, if it is not possible for this CUP to be taken away unless I drink it, may Your will be done” (v 42).
Yes, Jesus through total obedience to the Father’s will drank “this CUP” whilst He hung on the Cross of Calvary. He endured the full force of the wrath of a Holy God against sin. He ‘paid the price’ – He ‘drank’ “this CUP” to its bitterest end. The judgement, the sentence has been satisfied – but only for those who come ‘under the blood’ of Christ.
Just as in the first Passover, the people had to take cover under the blood of the sacrifice when the angel of death passed through – or they would die with the Egyptians - so too for us. We have to accept and hide under the Blood of Jesus, Our Passover Lamb, in order to avoid “this CUP filled with the wine of (God’s) wrath”, which all the nations will “drink”.
This is yet to come but just as surely as Jesus came and drank the “Cup”, so “this CUP” will be poured out upon “all the nations” of the world and all will have to “drink it”, if they are not covered by the blood of Jesus.
That Day is coming.
