Colossians 4:5-6

“Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

Be circumspect.

Christianity is practical and real. We don’t have to be ‘strange and peculiar’ – just set apart and different. We don’t have to go around being objectionable, judgmental, cynical, critical, and negative.

We are the ones to whom Jesus has given us “life, and [we] have it to the full.” The enemy comes “only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10) and no matter how attractive his distractions are, they are at best only pleasant temporarily – and always end in death.

We have been given “grace” to ‘give it away.’ We should be polite, generous, and humble without needing to compromise our standards, beliefs and values. We should be kind as well as firm.

We should see every conversation, whether with family, friends, neighbours, tellers, supermarket check-out staff, petrol station attendants, check-in counter staff, doctors, dentists, restaurant waiting staff, employers, employees, colleagues or even ‘used-car’ salesmen as an opportunity to display the love of God.

No, not to preach ‘hell fire’ at them but to radiate the love of Christ to them, through a thankful and gracious spirit and the reality that we have a destiny and peace with God.

Yes, and when the time is right, we can share what we believe and why, or offer an opportunity to come and discover more through a Church or Small/Cell Group Outreach, or maybe an Alpha Course.

The first job is to build a good relationship. If we go around miserable and negative – that will never happen and people will try and avoid us – but be positive and caring and you’ll be amazed at how people become attracted to you and start opening up.

So many of us fail in relationships because we have been hoodwinked into believing Christians should be serious, killjoys and repressive. We are not supposed to hide our insecurities behind being a ‘so-called’ Christian.

Jesus was loved, very popular and attracted people from all walks of life, including prostitutes and Pharisees. Why? Because He had something they longed for – so too should we. By our very nature and conversation, we should be attractive and be peacemakers.

Maybe, it’s time for you and me to have a routine check-up on our lifestyle, conversation and attitudes. What is it we could improve on?

Ask God to give you grace, discernment and wisdom for every conversation you have today.

Let’s be “salt” and “light” today and every day.
