I AM WITH YOU AND WILL WATCH OVER YOU WHEREVER YOU GO
This is a very, very special verse for me! God not only said it to Jacob, He also said it to me!
It was a very significant and important day in my life. The Lord had called me to leave the 'security' of the life of a Bank Manager in London (which was more secure in those days!) and to trust Him and trust Him alone. To become involved with Him, in His plan to bring Christian radio to Europe.
To cut a long and painful saga short, my employers accepted my resignation and then told me when I should leave. Not the usual 3 months, but it started at 1 month and over the next three days, ended up by being just those 3 days! I was forbidden from telling any of my staff when I was leaving, why I was leaving or where I was going. I was told there would be a staff meeting 1/4 hr after I had walked out the office door.
I shall never forget that November Friday. It was a typically wet, November Friday afternoon in London. Not with warm tropical rain, but with a chilly drizzle, foreboding the onslaught of winter. I left at 4.15 pm as requested, closing the big heavy mahogany door behind me and walked out into the busy street feeling lonely and dejected. (I had worked for the Bank for nearly 20 years!)
I walked up into Cavendish Square. I was walking with my head down, probably from emotion as much as from the driving drizzle hitting my face and clinging to my glasses. Then I noticed it. I walked on, but felt constrained to walk back. I did and then walked on again. But no, I felt I had to go back and pick it up. It was the tear-off portion of one of those daily desk calendars. It was from Monday, so it must have been 'hanging around' for four days just for me to pick it up!
What did it say? Yes, you've guessed right. "I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go." I cracked! I was glad of the rain, because then no-one could see my tears. "You didn't need to do that, Lord." I cried - "Oh yes I did!" He lovingly replied.
What love and grace from my Heavenly Father! He knew exactly how I was feeling and 'stepped into time' to reveal His love once more to one of His children.
I was even more impressed when I found it hadn't been said originally to Moses, Joshua or Abraham but to Jacob. I couldn't remember reading it ever before!
Be encouraged today. The God of Jacob is our God and refuge. Just as He cared for him, for me, He'll care for you.
The promise is old but ever new, and ever true for you.
God says to you, today "I AM with you, and will watch over you wherever you go!" AMEN!
