What is that to do with the cross of Christ?
A whole lot! God was saying again that He is good. You see one of the "good" things about God is that He does not allow evil to triumph or evil men and women "to get away with it" forever.
Talk to a lot of people today and they believe that if God is a good God - then He won't send anyone to Hell - not the Biblical Hell, anyway. However, if you pursue their argument and ask should wrong be punished, if you find a "bad enough" wrong, they are quick to say it should.
If you then ask them if evil men and women should be punished, they say yes, particularly in the now. (This often includes such "good" people as politicians, local councillors and government employees - especially tax officials!) However, whatever their standard of right and wrong, at the worst end they will usually agree "those people" deserve to be stopped and judgement enforced.
Do they really want or expect a serial rapist or a "Hitler" in heaven? Of course, they don't. If God were not a good God all these people would be there too, continuing their "reigns of terror". Hell on earth would become Hell in heaven.
No, for God to be a good God, He has to judge, punish and ban evil forever. The Biblical God does.
In this statement, not only did God forewarn of the flood, but He also forewarned of Hell. But because of that, He was also prophesying Calvary.
He "earned" the right to send evil people to Hell, for in the Cross is a Way of Escape for everyone.
Yes, God will not always contend with man forever. A Day of reckoning is coming! Evil will be extinguished forever!
