March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Genesis 8:20
NOAH SACRIFICED BURNT OFFERINGS
Noah was a man of God.
Oh yes, he was human, he made mistakes, he even blew it when he got his heart's desire (his vineyard), but nevertheless, he was a man of God.
They tell me the Pope is prone to kiss the ground when he alights from a plane. It's the Vatican Airlines! One time when we went through Romania on the way to Israel there was a large number of Refusniks aboard. When the plane eventually landed at Tel Aviv there was uproar. Hats were thrown in the air, shouting, cheering, singing, clapping and crying with joy.
If you were Noah, how do you think you would react when you are finally released from the ark? Oh yes, it would have been a bit like being released from a prison, a zoo and a nautical circumnavigation of the earth all at once. But let's go deeper than those feelings.
You have been saved from the Wrath of God against mankind - and not only that - you are the only ones left.
You can keep your sci-fi imaginations from Star Trek and the like - this WAS REAL. God has spoken, God has acted, His wrath has been poured out and you have survived. You and yours alone have survived. How do you feel now?
I think it would be fair to say I would feel very humble and very grateful. Yes, very excited and exhilarated, as well but above all, extremely humble and grateful. So was Noah. He knew he was unworthy, he knew that he had been "saved by grace" - he was under no delusions! So now in a heart response - he sacrifices a burnt offering.
Who told him that God endorsed burnt offerings? Noah is before Moses. Noah is even before Abraham but here he is offering burnt sacrifices. Maybe he had heard of Abel! Maybe the Truth of God has been there from the beginning!
Yes, Noah was a righteous man, saved by grace just like you and me.
Jesus is our sacrifice. Are you grateful, are you humble?
Then what offering are you giving to God in response?
