August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth

We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now.

Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him.

1 John 1:9

IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS HE IS FAITHFUL AND JUST AND WILL FORGIVE US OUR SINS AND PURIFY US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS

How much there is of Scripture worthy of committing to memory!

Psalm 1; Psalm 23; Psalm 103; Psalm 139; John 3:16; Romans 8:1; John 10:10; the list goes on and on and yet I don't believe any list can be 'complete' without this one! Jesus said, "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36) and this is how it happens.

The longer we walk with Jesus; the closer we live with Jesus; and the more "sold out" we become, the more vital and precious this verse becomes.

Why? Because we become more and more aware of our failures, selfishness, self-centredness, pride, deep-seated rebellion and sinfulness. (Not a pretty sight!). The searchlight of the Holy Spirit shines brighter and brighter with each passing day and we have to come back, each time, to the Cross for forgiveness and cleansing.

It's the first part that is the hardest! I have to confess my sins. None of us likes doing that because it damages our pride! We want to be forgiven without it. We want God to deal with it "in His grace" so it doesn't effect us or humble us - it merely gets it out of the way. BUT THAT IS NOT HOW GOD WORKS. You can never be forgiven without confession and repentance. No, not to a priest, not to anyone else necessarily, but it must be done before God.

Admission of guilt is the first step towards freedom. Once you take that step in contrite honest humility, the rest is bound to follow, because it is a promise of God and God never reneges on any of His promises! If we don't confess, He would be unjust to forgive. If we don't confess, the Sacrifice of Calvary doesn't come into effect. Justice demands a penalty for sin. Sins have to be confessed and justice has to be seen to be done, and the Blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son will cleanse us from all sin.

But not only is the sin question dealt with, not only are we forgiven, and indeed not only are we justified, but over and above all that, we are also purified from all unrighteousness. And not just some, ALL.

We stand clean before the Holy, Omnipotent, Omniscient God and He reaches out His Hand in love and acceptance.

Have you been there, recently?

If not, try it now!
