ONE IN WHOM IS THE SPIRIT OF GOD
Joseph is often referred to, as a 'type' of Christ.
By that, we mean, that there are various characteristics about him or circumstances, which he experienced in his life, which point forward to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He was rejected by his family; he was humiliated and sold as a slave. He suffered in order to 'save' his brethren and after humiliation was very highly exalted.
One of the non-negotiable principles of God - Divine Principles - is that "he who humbles himself will be exalted and he who exalts himself will be humbled!" Both Joseph and Jesus were humbled, and then exalted.
Here in our verse for today, we have another similarity. Others noticed that Joseph was 'one in whom is the Spirit of God.' They did the same with Jesus.
I always find it interesting to read of instances of the presence of the Holy Spirit and His indwelling of people in the Old Testament. To so many Christians today, the Holy Spirit appeared on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 for the very first time! Well here He is alive and well resting in Joseph, and to such an extent that other non-believers recognise it. Even more interesting is the fact that when the pagans see it, they promote and elevate Joseph to the highest place in their kingdom!
Here we have one more glimpse of the heart and purposes of God. The indwelling of His Holy Spirit in mankind. It is not just a 'new thing' for 21st Century man - it has always been God's intention and plan. Joel indeed prophetically pointed by faith to the time when in Acts 2 - and referred by the Apostle Peter and appropriated by him at that time - the Spirit was poured out on all the disciples.
BUT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE PLAN OF GOD!
This to me is the thrill of Christianity and the Bible. There are threads running through it, which are like the red chord in a rope - they run right through the centre if we are but open and prepared to recognise them.
God always wanted to have a very close relationship with man - intimate fellowship - so that all could see that we are each "one in whom is the Spirit of God"!
