THE STREET OF THE CITY WAS OF PURE GOLD, AS PURE LIKE TRANSPARENT GLASS
Gold doesn't start off pure! Gold is refined in a refiner's fire!
It is exposed to heat and as it melts impurities come to the surface. These are removed and the temperature increased, which in turn then "releases" more impurities. The process is repeated until the gold is free from all impurities and the surface becomes like glass, in that it reflects light and images just like a mirror. It looks so clean and pure and clear that it takes on the apparent quality of glass, transparent glass.
John's "picture" could suggest many things - but undoubtedly it "speaks" of total purity. No impurity will ever enter or even exist in the city - it will be pure. The cost of the city's purity was the death of Jesus - no wonder, now the city streets are pure.
You can have total confidence in the purity of the city as the Lamb of God without spot or blemish brings it to us.
It speaks of glory. When the sun "struck" the gold on the Temple it shone so brightly and gloriously that no one could stay looking at it. It was far too intense and dazzling for human eyes to behold or watch. It not only hurt the eye, it damaged it. The gold of the city is not for human eyes either, neither it is a place sinful man will feel "at home" - it is not only pure, it is holy. Awesome in beauty and powerful in glory.
It speaks of truth. Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth". The streets are the way and the gold is truth. For only true gold will look as transparent as glass.
It speaks of extravagance! Our God is an extravagant God! We in our finite minds and limited resources tend to try and store our riches. God displays them for us to walk on! We hoard gold - He lays it out for us to trample on!
God is so rich in mercy and love. Yes, where we are going to, even our wildest dreams of joy and pleasure will be surpassed. God is extravagant.
Come walk on His largesse - His purity, His truth, for they are His way.
