August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth |
We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now. Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him. |
Psalm 139:13
YOU KNIT ME TOGETHER IN MY MOTHER'S WOMB
Microscopes!
That's what this verse makes me think of! David was an amazing man. A man after God's own heart. I believe that is why he gave us so many fabulous Psalms. Of all the Psalms I love, this has got to be near the very top of the list. Each verse is a separate glimpse of our Great Creator, Father, God. Here David turns the searchlight on us; who we are; where we come from. Like so many, he asked the hard questions. "What is the meaning of life? Why am I here? How did I really get here and does it matter? Is there more to life than what I see before me? Will the evil people always triumph or is there a good reason to be good? How can I find favour with God?" And, I guess, lastly "How big is God anyway?"
In this Psalm, his heart flows out in response to God and he provides some invaluable answers. We are left with a Psalm of doctrine rather than theology! A Psalm well worth memorising and frequent study. A reference Psalm for those important spiritual check-ups!
He starts looking at God looking at him. He is drawn to the omnipresence of God. A totally unique fact about our God! No other God is omnipresent! Remember too, satan isn't either, so don't let him con you into thinking he is, although he likes to pretend so. He then gets blown away as he turns the microscope on himself - even his own body and finds that God is omniscient too. He is "bright enough" to realise that his legs, feet and toes; his arms, hands and fingers; his head, eyes, nose and mouth were all formed within his mother's womb. However, his words suggest more than that to me. I think he was also conscious that his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and stomach together with his arteries, his veins, his bones and his whole nervous system were all there too.
Yes, they were all knit together within his mother's womb. His brain was there too. God knit him together - God is the only One who can! The womb is supposed to be that special place of God's knitting together. The place of security and innocence.
Today, statistics tell us that it is, in fact, the most dangerous place on earth! That is NOT God's design. Let's protect it with all the determination we have got - that life that God is in the process of knitting together.
God considers it precious in His sight. He did with all of us.
So should we.
