March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
John 10:18
I LAY IT DOWN OF MY OWN ACCORD
Yes, to the disciples, and to unbelievers today it does. It looks like suicide.
But there is a vast difference! Jesus did, as He said, "have authority to lay it down, and authority to take it up again." He is the only One who has that authority - it has not been given or delegated to us.
He "had" to have it. Jesus did not die at the "will" of the Chief Priests, or at the decree of Pontius Pilate nor by the force of public opinion. He did not bow to the intent of satan, the schemes of Judas, the denial of Peter or the forsaking of the other disciples.
He was not "caught up" in His own downfall, nor was He sucked into His death by anything beyond His control. He knew where He was going.
He could say, "go tell that fox (Herod), I shall drive out demons today and tomorrow and the third day I will reach my goal". He was not "subject" to kings and rulers - He was "above" them just as His authority was "above" theirs. He also had the authority to "save" His life.
Although they taunted Him on the cross "He saved others He cannot save Himself", they were wrong. He could save Himself.
And yet, maybe in one way, He couldn't! Had He been anyone else, other than Jesus, the Son of God, He probably would have saved Himself.
But, Hallelujah - He was and is God's Eternal Son, so He couldn't. He had devised a way to "bring us back" into relationship with a Holy God. It was the ONLY plan. There was no plan B, no other one, and there was no one else who could fulfil the plan!
God had approved the plan and sealed it by giving Jesus His Son authority to lay down His life and to take it again!
We have the invitation and authority to "lay down" our lives for Jesus, the King of Kings and His Kingdom.
Have you appropriated that authority for yourself?
