Death or life?
Dwight Pryor, that greatly refreshing Bible teacher from Dayton, Ohio, who reminds us of the Jewishness, not only of Jesus but also of our Jewish Roots and faith, remarked once that one of our problems in 'Western Christianity' is that we seem to concentrate on death rather than life.
Our Gospel message has been predominantly "what will happen to you, when you die?" Whereas Jesus and Jewish thought concentrated on life. Jesus gives us Eternal Life and He said "I am come that you might have life and life in all its fullness!"
Here Paul does refer to Christ's death, yes - he says that " For since (if), when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more having been reconciled shall we be saved through His Life."
That is not a once and for all thing - it is a present continuous thing! I keep needing to be saved every day. But we are continually being saved - because He keeps on continually living! His Life is a constant reminder of His Sacrifice, which justified us and reconciled us. It covers all my sin, yesterday, today and tomorrow and as long as Christ continues to live, I will continue to be saved.
And do you want the Good News? HE IS NEVER GOING TO DIE AGAIN! As you read the New Testament again, try and notice how often the resurrection of Jesus is referred to. I believe this is one of the reasons why.
Yes, Jesus is unique. He alone died and rose again and lives forever - no other religion has someone who has physically done that. But we have even more joy because while He lives I will be saved.
"Because He lives, I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know, I know who holds the future.
My life is worth the living, just because He lives."
Or as the old hymn writer wrote it:
"Before the Throne of God above, I have a strong a perfect plea.
A Great High Priest, whose name is Love, who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands, my name is written on His heart;
I know that while in Heaven He stands, no tongue can bid me thence depart."
We have salvation Eternally, because He Lives Eternally.
