AFTER THAT ... MORE THAN 500 AT THE SAME TIME, MOST OF WHOM ARE STILL LIVING
Remember what I said before?
If you want to stamp out Christianity once and for all, all you have to do is to produce His dead body.
Well, here we have reference to 500 people who have seen His body - His resurrected body - who will verify that He rose from the dead. More than 500 people who saw Him all at the same time.
Oh I agree, that numbers don't necessarily prove anything, but that is because we live in a manipulated society and so we are sceptical of figures and statistics, but in Paul's day, the truth was still verifiable. He exclaims in effect - you don't have to take my word for it - go and ask them for yourself, most of them are still alive.
I must admit I find that comforting, don't you. That we are told many people could witness to the physical resurrection of Jesus? He is unique in this. No one else claims what He claims, and no other group can verify such a claim for someone else.
Let's have a recap. There's Mary; Peter; the two going to Emmaus; the eleven (or the ten and then with Thomas); then Paul adds in James the half brother of Jesus; and this group of over 500.
Furthermore, Jesus walked around on earth for nearly six weeks before He ascended into heaven and sent the Holy Spirit. Not quite "in secret" as some would try to suggest, is it?
I also wonder how many saw Him but didn't recognise Him. Like Mary; like Cleopas - yes, they "recognised" Jesus afterwards but that was because He opened their eyes - but I wonder how many more "missed" the most amazing sight of Jesus in resurrection glory.
I am so glad I don't have to believe in myths but in facts. Jesus is Alive. There are enough eyewitnesses to prove it.
Has He appeared to you? Have you by faith "seen" the Resurrected Christ?
If not, don't be afraid to ask Him to give you a glimpse. It will change your life!
