2 Chronicles 7:16
I HAVE CHOSEN AND CONSECRATED THIS TEMPLE SO THAT MY NAME MAY BE THERE FOREVER
David had the desire and vision; Solomon carries it out and now God 'owns' it!
Solomon has already admitted that it could not 'contain' God, but God in His love and mercy says "I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that My Name may be there for ever." It may not be able to contain Me, but I will put My Name there - a representation of Me. "My eyes and My heart will always be there." Why? Because God has always wanted to be 'with' His people and this for them would be just that.
God also said of this very place "If My people who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
God would be in the midst of His people - caring for them; blessing them; watching and listening. However, if they turned away, He would still be there for them if they humbled themselves and returned to Him. It was God's intention to remain there forever!
BUT THE TEMPLE HAS GONE!
Why? Was God not 'big enough' to protect it? Could He not deal with His and their enemies? Of course, He could! But He will never impose His Sovereign will over our free will. We always have a choice. Yes, He could easily deal with all their enemies - but their 'rot' set in from the inside.
They rejected God, which effectively rendered Him helpless. God still knew their plight. Despite their rejection of Him, He still heard and saw; He still watched from a distance.
What about you today? You who are called by His Name? He is watching over you - but He longs to be intimate!
