God's promises are sure! Let's spend this month, the last of the year, reminding ourselves that His promises are sure and certain, and then let's become a grateful people! |
Luke 1:13
YOU ARE TO GIVE HIM THE NAME...JOHN!
Names are important to God!
We are NOT numbers only - we are individuals with names and God knows your name. Sometimes He specifically told parents what to call their children, but we are all known by God by our own name, which is unique to us, as far as He is concerned.
God is often especially interested in the children of 'barren' women! Take Isaac! Take Samuel! Take John and take Jesus. All very special in the eyes of the Lord and each 'called' for a very special purpose. But we are all 'called' for a special purpose. God has ordained a plan for each of us, too, right from our mother's womb.
What of John? "He will be a joy and delight to you (his parents) and many will rejoice because of his birth. He will be great in the sight of the Lord. Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God. He will go on before the Lord in the spirit of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
John was a humble man. He said of Jesus "He must increase, I must decrease." Jesus said of John "I tell you, among those born of women, there is no-one greater than John" Luke 7:28. I believe what was said of John could be said of each one of us, too. We can be great in the sight of the Lord. How?
When we fulfil what is equally our 'calling' - "To bring back people to the Lord. To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." As we saw yesterday that will prepare the Way for the Lord!
As we draw towards the end of year and make all sorts of preparations for the Christmas festivities, and New Year, may I challenge you to review this year and ask yourself - "Have I been like John, this year? Have I lived my life like him?"
May I also challenge you to seriously consider making those things a priority for next year?
We all have a choice how we live our lives. John was 'sold out' to Jesus.
Are YOU like John?
