June Topic: FAITH (for without faith it is impossible to please God)

This month let's have a look at how we can please God and at the same time experience the dynamic power of God which will make our Christianity very exciting and totally contagious!

Hebrews 11:9

(ABRAHAM) ... LIVED IN TENTS

I want to end this month looking at some verses from Hebrews 11 that great faith chapter.

I shall never forget when the Lord emphasised this verse to me. There were a lot of contributing factors. First of all, we came from England to New Zealand in 1988, ostensibly for a year of training. That year we lived out of five suitcases and lived in rented accommodation. We were lent a car, and were given two bicycles for the children to share. We didn't really "own" anything in New Zealand and our lives were so much simpler. I can remember when it was time to emigrate; wishing England and our possessions would just float away into oblivion!

Well, the container full eventually arrived and we became "just like everyone else". Responsible for a house and mortgage. We thought we were in Christchurch to stay. Then came that message. Rhema's Head Office was to be transferred to Auckland. Being a part of the "think tank" didn't make the decision any easier for our own lives! So we cut roots once more and moved to Auckland.

I remember saying to Hal Short, the President of Rhema, when we eventually bought our house in Christchurch "I've 'lived' in 50 different homes since I joined UCB in England in 1987." He replied, " I hate to think what the Lord has been preparing you for!"

In our 23 years of marriage the longest we have been in one house is five years and we only ever move because my jobs have made us move towns or cities. We are now in our eleventh.

About ten days after moving to Auckland I had to go back to England for a quick visit to see my frail parents and on the way to England I went through South America. I suddenly had this overwhelming feeling "I don't belong anywhere any more - and yet I belong everywhere! This earth is not my "Home". Heaven is my "Home" and where God is, that is "Home" to me. Wherever God sends me is also "home", but I don't belong anywhere on earth any more."

I very seriously contemplated never buying another house. I have, but I only hold on to it very lightly.

Abraham could have built a city. He was born into one. Ur was a big city for those days. But he chose to live in a tent. Why? To prove he didn't belong on earth. He was deliberately making a statement to "the world".What about you? Where are your roots? Are you fixed or just passing through?

What statement are you making?
