Luke 1:48
FROM NOW ON ALL GENERATIONS WILL CALL ME BLESSED
As we saw yesterday, Mary was 'one of a kind'.
She was so humble that she was prepared to 'present her body as a living sacrifice to God' - for His sole use and no matter what the 'cost' to herself. To me, it is little wonder that He was able to use Mary - when we see the kind of heart, the kind of spirit and the kind of humility she had.
Even in her song she reveals more of her humility. She ranked herself with the hungry, the poor and those that fear the Lord. Her declaration was not that we should revere her; not that we should 'put her on a pedestal,' but rather she was exclaiming that we will think of her, and say 'how privileged, how mightily blessed by God's grace that she should be chosen to be the one who would be used to bring the Saviour into the world.'
She was extolling God from the overflow of her heart, full of praise and worship. Her focus was not on herself and the fact that she was 'suitable' to be chosen, but that although she was 'nothing', of 'no importance', of no 'significance', yet God's grace abounded to her. She had been overwhelmed by His Love and His Grace and His Mercy. She was to be overshadowed by the Power of the Almighty.
Today, Protestants seldom consider Mary, but hey, she is worth thinking about! You see we need to consider Mary, not just at Christmas, but also at Epiphany and at Easter.
When Jesus was born, there was no normal family get together to rejoice at the male Baby's birth. Just a cold open manger in the side of a hill. BUT GOD responded by sending angels and shepherds! Then came the Magi from the east. What an incredible visit from Mary's point of view? But what of His childhood and the fact He left home wandering as an itinerate Rabbi, from Galilee to Judea and back, but staying in Capernaum rather than her home of Nazareth.
Then the weeks, days and hours leading up to Calvary? The 'clock had been set' at His birth. All she could do was to watch, ponder and grieve as only a mother can.
The woman in the crowd called out "Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you." Jesus replied, "Blessed rather, are those that hear the Word of God and obey it!" Mary had already done that. Now Jesus was opening 'Blessedness' up to everyone else.
If we are obedient to the Word of God, then others will look at us and call us 'blessed'!
From now on, will all generations call YOU blessed?
