Ephesians 1:15
AND YOUR LOVE FOR ALL THE SAINTS
Well, has anyone heard of your love for all the saints?
We moved to a new location, a big city and very shortly afterwards I had to go overseas. My wife was left to find a 'spiritual home' for the family, in my absence. Having three teenage children you tend to be 'noticed' when you arrive at a church and so I expected no difficulties.
You can imagine my sadness and despair on learning that they had gone to quite a few in the local area but none had been welcoming. One topped the lot. No one spoke, let alone gave any welcome, and Cathryn and the three children had to squeeze past the pastor's wife to get out through the doorway, and yet still no acknowledgment let along greeting was given.
You can imagine her surprise when in the evening the notices were given out and the special one was "we are going to fast and pray ... to find out how we can reach out to the community."
What is the point of reaching out into the community, if you totally ignore them, when they cross your threshold? If you don't love the saints, you sure as won't love the sinners - and you don't love God!
However, on the other side, I have heard of a church in London, where if you are a visitor/stranger, by the time you reach the exit on your way out at the end of the service, you can expect to have received at least three invitations to lunch!
Which Church would you rather attend? What is your church like?
May I say this - your church is made up of people like you. Do you love the saints? Do you really care for a few? What are you like at the dying art of hospitality? Is there ever an extra place setting at your table?
What about visiting ministries? We all love the variation and often vitality they bring - but who can find a billet/a bed for them? We all prefer to leave it to someone else don't we? I'm too busy. I've had such a hard week. The house is in a mess.
Why is it the really busy people always find the time?
Why is it the really poor people can find an extra meal?
Why is it the couple with the large family always seems to be able to find room?
Has anyone heard of your love for the saints?
Has Jesus heard of your love for all the saints?
