March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Numbers 21:8
MAKE A SNAKE AND PUT IT ON A POLE
God is into symbolism.
I believe it is so we, as human beings, can try and relate the finite with the Infinite.
God said, "Don't make any images of things on earth", and yet here, He tells Moses to make a snake and put it on a pole - and so he does. He makes it out of bronze.
"But just a minute - a bronze snake? What earthly good is a bronze snake to someone who has been bitten by a real one? For goodness sake, - pass out the antidote and don't be so foolish! What can a bronze snake do? We know idols can do nothing - what is it with this snake? Have you lost your marbles, Moses?"
He replies - "Don't worry about the poison, look at the bronze snake! Don't worry about the pain, look at the bronze snake! For goodness sake - just look at the bronze snake - and live!"
Why was it put up on a pole? So people throughout the camp could see it. No matter where the tribe was, on the north, south, east or west of the camp - they could all see it because it was put high up on a pole.
What would you have done? Rationalised the situation? Quoted Scripture? Or just plain doubted? The rules were simple - Look and Live.
How we complicate the Gospel! Look and Live. That was all they had to do.
I wonder how many of those folk died because of pride, scepticism, cynicism, religiosity, and doubt. It didn't stop the efficacy of the snake on the pole but it did stop its effectiveness.
If you are "sold out" to God, you need to be ready for the unexpected.
It requires a life of faith - simple trust and obedience!
Trust and obey, for there's no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey
