March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
John 3:14
AS MOSES LIFTED UP THE SNAKE IN THE DESERT
Have you noticed how Jesus always homed in on those areas in the Old Testament so many want to fantasise, ridicule, fablise or leave out?
He talks of Noah and the flood; He talks of Jonah and the whale, and here, He talks about Moses and the snake. For me, that's enough that settles it. If it's in the Bible it must be true, and if Jesus quotes it, that is double confirmation.
But do you notice, that not only does He refer to these events but He actually emphasises them by relating them to His own life and purpose. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up.
Strange isn't it? I love it. I think it's great, because if Jesus was not ashamed to refer to it, then neither need I be. I may not understand the whys and wherefores, I may not understand the full significance of the issues, but I need have no fear of using them, referring to them, or quoting them.
What about this one? Jesus was trying to explain to Nicodemus spiritual issues but his mind was too carnal. So He "takes" Nicodemus back to the desert and Moses. Then begins the most wonderful revelation in Scripture, for not only does He remind him of the snake and then prophesy His death, but He goes on to declare the very heart of God.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
I love this picture. Why? Because to so many, the sight of a bronze snake on a pole for healing and salvation must have been totally illogical and even nonsensical. In just the same way - a "man" on a cross 2000 years ago dying in my place so I can be forgiven, brought back into a right relationship with God and set free into a life of peace and victory can seem equally illogical and nonsensical.
BUT THEY ARE BOTH TRUE.
The cry goes out still today - LOOK AND LIVE!
Don't let doubt and cynicism fool you! Don't let rationalisation or logic rob you!
