This month I want to remind us What ON EARTH We should be doing! And What is our FATHER'S heartbeat? What is His greatest desire? |
1 Corinthians 1:18
FOR THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS IS FOOLISHNESS
Well I can't argue with that.
Of course, it is foolishness to those who are perishing. And if it was foolishness to people in Paul's day, how much more today, some 20 centuries later!
What possible relevance can a man's death on a Roman cross 2000 years ago, have for me?
I think those of us who have been saved a long time and studied our Bibles regularly since then, forget what it was like before we were saved. But the foolishness is not just historical - that's only part of it.
There's also the challenge of the afterlife. We live in a society, which boasts - live for today. Tomorrow, the future and any afterlife are irrelevant - something we haven't got time to worry or think about.
Then there is the challenge of the cross itself. The cross is a stumbling block to the Jews - to us as Gentiles it is foolishness. Why is it foolishness? Because it is one of the many paradoxes of the Bible. How can I have life - through someone's death? If God is all-powerful - how come Jesus had to die? Why doesn't God just 'zap us' so we become pure and holy instantly?
If God is Eternal - How did Jesus - the Word of God, the Son of God, die?
But the one that really irks is this. Why must I surrender to someone else? Why must I repent, apologise and submit to a Jew who died on a cross?
Get the answer right to that one - the rest is easy to accept.
But remember we have to proclaim the message of the cross because "to us who are being saved it is the power of God!"
