This month I want to remind us What ON EARTH We should be doing! And What is our FATHER'S heartbeat? What is His greatest desire? |
1 Corinthians 1:23
BUT WE PREACH CHRIST CRUCIFIED
Do we? Do you?
Or have we found something 'better'?
People want to follow a megastar, a superman, a Rambo. People want someone to emulate, look up to, to follow. I believe those of us who are committed to reach out to the 'lost' and the 'unchurched' face a real challenge.
Do we 'water down' the bits of the Gospel which are hard to understand, hard to swallow, hard to accept, and would 'put off' those we are trying to reach? Is that the reason our churches are emptying? Is that why we have 'church hoppers' today?
Some won't face the challenge and accept it and may leave - that's fine. You can't make people believe. But I believe there is another side too. If 'our Gospel' is so weak, so doctored, so mediocre, so compromising, so ineffective and people leave - that is not only our problem - but we have misrepresented God and misled the people - on both counts we are accountable to God.
This phrase raises its challenge to the Church, century after century, decade after decade, and year after year. What will you do about it? Yes, I'm into the Power of God, I'm into all the victory I can get, and I'm a resurrection person. But you cannot have any of those without Christ crucified.
Christ crucified points the way! Which way? The way of the Cross. Unless I am prepared to take up my cross daily I cannot be a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Cross must be foundational and central to all our preaching or we shall mislead the people. Oh yes, our presentation, our packaging should be relevant and current but somewhere Christ has to be preached crucified.
Paul never wandered far - we do so to our peril, and the peril of our listeners.
Make it fundamental, make it non-negotiable in your preaching - "Christ Crucified".
