February Topic: WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING |
This month I want us to look at why we are still on earth! We are not in Heaven yet - we are destined to go there - and many of us would like to go there quickly (be it to escape the present, be released from the pain experienced on earth or just out of an overwhelming desire to "be with Jesus"). So why can't we go there straight away once we have become a Christian? Maybe there is still something for me to do or become on earth. Let's together have a look at what we are here for... |
Acts 16:46
WE NOW TURN TO THE GENTILES
Well, if we only turn to the Gentiles on the 29th of February we are only going to reach out once in four years!
How hard it must have been for Paul. He was a Pharisee of the Pharisees. Of the tribe of Benjamin. If there was ever a 100% Jew, one of Abraham's children, and one of the chosen race, it was Paul.
See Philippians 3:4-6. He was a thoroughbred of thoroughbreds, none of this 1/16th part or whatever. This means he had lineage. He had roots, and his roots were not like a daisy, all on the surface - this man didn't even have just one "tap" root - he had more like "river" roots!
Because of these roots, he had climbed the religious ladder swiftly before his conversion and he was "recognised" as "genuine" by his Judaic peers and masters. How hard it must have been, therefore, when they rejected what he said and set out to persecute and kill him. Those who should have listened respected and revered him were the very ones who wanted to rid themselves of him. Even though he had been as zealous as them, it made no difference.
But God knew what He was doing! Because not only did Saul have a unique Jewish background, he also had a unique national background. He was born in Tarsus and as such was a Roman citizen, by birth. Roman citizenship was not "given" lightly. You could purchase it at great cost - but Paul was "born" a Roman citizen, which made all the difference.
The Romans were Gentiles. The Romans had a vast empire. What could be more fitting than for a person born a Roman citizen to go and preach to the Gentiles and travel throughout the mighty Roman Empire spreading the Good News?
Where were you born? Don't spurn your roots - God chose them for you.
However, if they reject you, move on at the prompting of the Holy Spirit and let Him turn you to your "Gentiles", whilst like Paul, retaining that burden for your roots.
