August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth |
We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now. Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him. |
Revelation 3:5
HE WHO OVERCOMES WILL BE DRESSED IN WHITE...I WILL NEVER ERASE HIS NAME
SARDIS - (Overcoming - lethargy)
Sardis was a city set up high on a hill. There was a sheer cliff face to reach the summit where the city was, so its inhabitants considered it totally impregnable.
Yet a simple 'insignificant' accident betrayed it! One day a soldier looked down over the city wall and his helmet fell onto an outcrop from the cliff below, and lodged there. He climbed down, retrieved it and climbed back up to his post. But he hadn't realised that an enemy was watching! Hyeroeades had seen him and suddenly realised that the heights were climbable! He was then courageous enough to lead his Persian troops up the same cracked rock face and on into the totally unguarded city to overwhelming victory. It happened again, after the death of Alexander the Great - They had NOT learned their lesson!
Oh yes, they had been rich. Gold had been found in the riverbed, but then they had been lulled into a sense of wealth and impregnability. They had become self-indulgent.
How many of us as Christians are the same! Our lives are not really all that different from the lives of the unsaved. The only real difference is that we believe we are going to Heaven when we die. We've been forgiven, yet only at the cost of the death of the Son of God, but we still lead the same lifestyle as everyone else. We commit the same sins, because although we were once challenged by them, we don't seem to "notice" them any more. Our sensitivity becomes dead. We no longer have time to search the Scriptures for ourselves - so we let someone else do it for us and thereby open up ourselves to all sorts of heresy with no conscience to tell us it is wrong! "They will maintain a facade of religion but their conduct will deny its validity" (J.B.Phillips 2 Tim 3:5).
"Woe to you when people speak well of you!" said Jesus We should expect opposition! We should be constantly on watch - on our guard! We should live everyday as if it is our last. We should expect the Lord's return to come "as a thief in the night."
To him who overcomes - white robes. No worshipper may enter a temple in soiled clothes!
In those days, if you were baptised it would be as an adult and as you came back up out of the water you would be given a white robe to wear. So if you do not deny your baptismal vows, you too, will receive a white robe of "well done good and faithful servant." White robes also speak of festivity, victory, purity and resurrection.
To walk with God is to be like Enoch! He walked with God and one day carried on that walk straight on into Heaven.
I will never erase his name. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life will ever enter Heaven. They are the faithful citizens of the kingdom of God.
He will confess his name before His Father. If we confess Jesus Christ before men, Jesus will confess us before His Father in Heaven.
Jesus Christ is forever true to the man who is true to Him. It's worth overcoming lethargy, isn't it?
