August Topic: Security, Significance and Self-worth |
We all need to come back to basics from time to time and what better time to do it than now. Let's spend this month together reminding ourselves of those important issues which make up some of the foundation of our Christian relationship with God and our walk with Him. |
John 21:15
DO YOU TRULY LOVE ME MORE THAN THESE?
I've walked the shores of Galilee where traditionally this encounter took place.
There is a monument there to remind us. What caught my eye, however, was not the monument, although that is well worth seeing, but the remains of a fire on the beach.
You see God pays particular attention to detail! Especially when He wants us to be restored into fellowship with Him and made whole. Peter denied Jesus three times. This was the third time Jesus appeared to His disciples after His resurrection.
Where was Peter that fateful night? He was standing warming himself beside a fire of burning coals. Jesus decided that that should be the same setting for his restoration!
John records the scene - maybe because it was so profound to him, too - he records both events.
No, Jesus did not use driftwood, or dry twigs for this one - it had to be burning coals. That takes extra time and effort! Peter had denied Jesus three times in front of others - now he is to be "restored" three times in front of the disciples.
God is always gracious with us and always deals with issues completely, so that we can be completely restored and set free.
As I think about this passage again today, I can't but help remember one particular meeting it was referred to. It was many years ago in England. It was our Bank's Annual Service. The Bishop of Salisbury at the time was the Rt Rev Fison, an old frail gentleman who climbed slowly up the steps into the high wooden pulpit. He leaned heavily on the front rail and to everyone's amazement, amidst total respectful, expectant silence; he began his sermon by slamming his fist down three times on the solid brass rail, shouting, "Do you love Me? Do you love Me? Do you love Me?" I shall never forget the atmosphere generated nor the poignancy of that moment.
Most of his hearers would not have been Christians, but rather folk who just wanted to be seen "doing the right thing". I've often prayed since, that they like me may never forget that scene but rather, that they would one day, like Peter, be able to say "Lord, you know all things - you know that I love you!"
And you? Do YOU truly love Him more than these?
