1 John 1:1
WHICH WE HAVE SEEN WITH OUR EYES... OUR HANDS HAVE TOUCHED
Whenever I read this verse, and it happened again just now, I feel the peace and love of God flood into my spirit.
Why? Because it proclaims truth, authenticity and reality. I am so thrilled that Christianity is real. There is nothing of which we need to be afraid, or ashamed. The problems are not for those of us who believe, but rather for those who refuse to believe.
We are following, not only the testimony of those who were there - those who had seen with their eyes, which they had looked at and which their hands had touched but by faith, we can do the same and on top of all that, we have the ever-present indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to verify the facts and prove that the life we live is not just human but eternal.
John in this opening part of his letter, which is ostensibly written to everyone, for as we see, there is no specific greeting here, is at pains to set out for everyone that there can be no shadow of doubt that he knows what he is talking about. (Or writing about, if you prefer!) (Particularly as we understand it was written largely to counter the growing influence of Gnosticism)
We saw with our own eyes - we are eye-witnesses - we did not hear it from others, we did not rely on other people's opinions, we saw Him with our very own eyes! More than that, we looked at Him. It was not just a fleeting glance. We absorbed Him in our vision. We pondered over what we saw to make sure we understood it properly and that it was the Truth. More even than that, we reached out and touched Him. Yes, what we report may seem "out of this world" but we handled Him. He is genuine. Unique, yes, but also genuine - we can assure you that!
Christianity is unique too. No other religion can compare. They may try to copy parts of Christianity but they cannot bear exposure!
Christianity when exposed reveals TRUTH!
Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. To reach out and touch Him. To say that we love Him.
Open OUR eyes Lord; we want to see Jesus, too!
