January Topic: OBEDIENCE IS GREATER THAN SACRIFICE |
Of all the things I have had to learn over the length of my lifetime - this is the most important. If we don't get this right, the rest is impossible. So let's spend this first month of the year getting our priorities in the correct order. |
Hebrews 5:8
HE LEARNED OBEDIENCE FROM WHAT HE SUFFERED
When it comes to awesome statements I think this must be one at the top of the list.
Jesus "learned obedience from what He suffered". He was a son. More than that - He was The Son and yet He learned obedience from what He suffered.
We shall never be able to fathom the depths of the humanity of the Son of God. Our finite minds can never grasp the breadth, length, height and depth of the Infinite. As Charles Wesley wrote "our God contracted to a span, incomprehensively made Man!"
He was there in the Beginning, before the worlds were made - before "the light shone". He was there at creation. He was there at the Fall and must have realised then, that one day He would have to make the Ultimate Sacrifice in order for the loving relationship to be restored and justice satisfied.
If the Son of God learned obedience from what He suffered, is it not logical to expect that His true followers would do the same?
Children often do, don't they? You say, "don't touch the stove or cooker". They reach out their hand to do so and you smack it - and they learn that touching it "earns" a smack. So they learn to obey what you say - through the smack they suffer! In the early years much is suffered and obedience learned!
But Jesus was perfect. He didn't need to suffer! He was obedient "already"! What humility He has shown us. He the "Perfect One" learned obedience through what He suffered!
What are you "suffering" for Jesus? Are you learning obedience or rebellion?
If we are to be "like Jesus" we can expect to learn obedience through what we suffer.
There is no easy way.
Are you up to it? Will you pay the price? Will you really "be like Jesus?"
