March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
John 14:15
I LAY DOWN MY LIFE FOR THE SHEEP
Jesus would have known Isaiah 53 - "all we like sheep have gone astray", and "the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all".
In one sense, this is another example of Jesus claiming His deity, His Messiahship - what a mission was His! What grace was shown by the Lord of Glory!
How often have you looked at and watched sheep? Have you noticed their timidity, their "innocence", their helplessness, their dependence, their stubbornness, their recklessness, and their stupidity?
The more I have to counsel and interact with people, the more I understand why Jesus compares people with sheep!
I love that clip at the end of Crocodile Dundee I, where Dundee is trying to get a message to Sue. Their messages are passed from person to person and then they decide they need to embrace but between them, now standing either end of a subway platform, are "hundreds" of people. He is struggling to negotiate them when someone suggests that they are all acting just like sheep. At this point Dundee remembers how he deals with sheep. He climbs on their backs to get across the confined flock. So up he climbs and wanders across the heads and shoulders of the waiting throng! Sheep. People just like sheep.
As Christians we are apt to treat people like sheep too. Harshly, unsympathetically, unlovingly. Who cares about sheep?
One thing is certain about New Zealand; we know what a sheep looks like too! Each year thousands of lambs are lost through stillbirth, wind, rain, snow and floods. We feel sorry for the farmers but do we care about the sheep and lambs?
What about us in the Church? Do we really care about the "flock" that God has entrusted to us, or is it just a case of they must follow where we lead. That maybe fine for us, but who cares about the "lost ones", the hurting ones, the silly ones?
Jesus said, "I lay down My life for the sheep." Can we honestly do less?
