March Topic: THE CENTRALITY OF THE CROSS |
This month we will look at the death of Jesus Christ our Lord from various angles and see how it is totally relevant to all we are called to be and do. |
Luke 24:26
DID NOT THE CHRIST HAVE TO SUFFER THESE THINGS
How often our concept of God and His will is wrong!
Often its because we rely on our own experiences - what we've been told, and how things have worked out for us. But circumstantial evidence is not a "pure" judge of God's will.
Take these two folk on the way to Emmaus. They had heard about Jesus. They had probably been brought up in the synagogue, which told them that God was unapproachable, and so holy you can't even say His name. The Messiah will come to earth to be King. He will set the captives free - us - by releasing us from the bondage of Rome and we will enjoy peace and prosperity forever.
They may well even have seen Jesus and spent time with Him. Maybe they were even there at His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. And for them, through their hereditary "Bible" teaching and experience, Jesus looked the part - until the last week!
Suddenly everything started falling apart. We thought He was the Messiah - with the miracles and all. The people were all behind him. If He had only openly challenged the religious leaders and Rome, the masses would have been behind Him and swept Him into power. But just when everything was going right, He backed off, and allowed them to "capture Him" at night in secret. By then, the religious leaders had gained the upper hand and normality was restored with Rome playing into their hands. So close and yet so very far away!
Oh, to have been there for the ensuing Bible study! Jesus at His resurrection best, showing them everything in the Old Testament concerning Himself. In the Pentateuch, the Prophets, and the Psalms. His sacrificial death for them and for us.
What a unique privilege!
What about you?
Following Jesus? - Yes, we are victorious, but do not His followers end up on a cross in this life, too?
Or shall we take the "easy" ride to Heaven?
