I WILL ESTABLISH MY COVENANT WITH YOU
God is a covenant keeping God!
How do I know? I saw a rainbow yesterday!
Don't let the Holy become profane. Don't let the rainbow become just another rainbow, or revert to the commonplace. It is a sign of God's covenant with Noah, which still stands today!
Actually today's verse is a repeat from chapter 6:18 - God told Noah then, before the Flood, that He would establish His covenant with him then, and He repeats it here and puts a 'bow' in the sky as a sign of His covenant.
We know now, of course, that a rainbow is in fact a circle not just an arc. A circle because it cannot be broken and because it is continuous. It is also caused by the 'joining' of light and water.
Noah was the first carnivore. Up until the Flood mankind was vegetarian. After the Flood, God told Noah he could eat everything that lives and moves as well as the green plants. At that point, it seems, none of the animals or birds were considered unclean. Only the 'life blood' was sacred.
God also gave the warning that every man and every animal that killed another man was accountable to God, so the animals didn't get away with it either! Did Noah say "Thanks for telling me that now after we are all out of the Ark!"?
But listen - ALL of God's covenants are everlasting. The rainbow is still there for all to see, worldwide! His covenant with Noah has not failed. God reveals something of Himself through each of His covenants and from each at least three words stand like beacons to all generations - Grace, Love, Faithfulness.
We don't deserve any of them; He establishes them because He loves to and He loves us. He never invokes one, establishes one, He will not or cannot keep. Furthermore we can appropriate them all for ourselves - make them our own promises too. Why? Because the God of Noah is also the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Peter, Stephen, Paul, Dr Martin Luther King Jnr, Dr Billy Graham, and me and you!
God has established His covenant with YOU!
