Hebrews 13:15
THROUGH JESUS THEREFORE LET US CONTINUALLY OFFER TO GOD A SACRIFICE OF PRAISE
Being thankful is a 'dying art' it seems. So is praising God.
Go to any meeting and invite spontaneous praise and silence reigns supreme! For a people redeemed not with perishable things like silver and gold but by the precious blood of Christ, we seem to be singularly ungrateful. I'm told Hallelujah is not so much a word to praise God, as a 'call' to praise God. So if I say Hallelujah - you should not respond Hallelujah or Amen but rather burst out with excitement and phrases of praise and thanks to God. Paul in Romans 12 asks us, pleads with us, to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to God. God says obedience is greater than sacrifice. Put the two together and we see a life of obedience is a sacrifice of praise to God.
But obedience isn't all. We need to be thankful too. We need to get to know God, so that, not only can we praise and thank Him for what He has done, which is as awesome as it is gracious, but also we will get to know His character and so will overflow with praise and worship for who He is. Read the Psalms and get some help from David. I also like to remind myself of all those names of Jesus, and God. The 'I AM's' of Christ. The Jehovah - names of God. Jehovah Nissi - The Lord our Banner. Jehovah Jireh - The Lord will provide. Jehovah Raphe - the God who heals you. As you get to know and understand His character, so praise and worship will well up from within you.
Sometimes we find it hard to praise God. But remember what David said, "I will not offer to God something which costs me nothing." Maybe that is what the Hebrew writer was referring to. Our sacrifice should 'cost us' something too. It should not be just a mental exercise but overflow from a grateful and full heart of love, devotion, and obedience. Let us offer to God a sacrifice of praise continually, starting if necessary, today!
