November Topic: EMMANUEL - GOD WITH US

WE HAVE SEEN HIS GLORY!

Let's spend November together looking at the fact that God longs to be with us and for us to spend time with Him.

Genesis 18:17

SHALL I HIDE FROM ABRAHAM WHAT I AM ABOUT TO DO?

Another glimpse of the Sovereign Grace of the Sovereign God!

There was absolutely no reason whatsoever why God should discuss Sodom and Gomorrah with Abraham. God is Sovereign, which means that He can do what He likes, when He likes, with whom or what He likes, and we, His creation, can just say in response - AMEN, SO BE IT LORD.

May I encourage you to let that sink right down from your mind into your very heart and soul? God has no obligations to us whatsoever. We need to remind ourselves of that from time to time, otherwise, because of our carnal ego, arrogance and feeling of self-importance, we forget who were are and who God really is.

Yes, I know we have been saved and justified, but God is still God. Yes, I have been given the right to be called a son of God, but my attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus who though He is God, humbled Himself. Yes, our God is the Eternal, Creator, Sovereign God - Holy, Holy, Holy, - and who, as He reminded Job, is not answerable to anyone!

Yet, here we see a glimpse, as I said, of the gracious character of our God. He condescends to talk to Abraham about what He is going to do. Remember He told Noah? Now He discusses with Abraham. God admits that He has promised to make Abraham into a great nation, and here, before Isaac is born, He confirms His promise.

Not only that, but this is part of Abraham's training. God wants him to 'direct' his household and his children after him, to keep the ways of the Lord by doing what is right and just. He was to teach Abraham righteousness and justice - not only to discuss it in theory, but also show him in practice. Also He was going to demonstrate His grace.

After the 'chat' it is obvious that Abraham realised that there were under 10 righteous people in Sodom. In fact, it would appear that Lot was the only righteous one left. His wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt; his sons-in-law, by engagement, stayed in Sodom and were destroyed, and his daughters later committed incest - 'as a matter of course.'

Yet God, in His love, grace and infinite mercy sent two angels to Sodom, in response to Abraham's conversation (see Chapter 19:29) to save them. They, however, had to take Lot, his wife and daughters by the hand and drag them out!

God is gracious enough to hold conversations with us, too.

Try it - it's amazing what you will learn!
