February Topic: WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING |
This month I want us to look at why we are still on earth! We are not in Heaven yet - we are destined to go there - and many of us would like to go there quickly (be it to escape the present, be released from the pain experienced on earth or just out of an overwhelming desire to "be with Jesus"). So why can't we go there straight away once we have become a Christian? Maybe there is still something for me to do or become on earth. Let's together have a look at what we are here for... |
Matthew 10:18
ON MY ACCOUNT ... AS WITNESSES
You will be brought before Governors and Kings as witnesses to them.
I used to think that sounded quite nice. I would receive a telegram, or special letter with the royal coat of arms or special insignia inviting me to present myself before the Queen in order to tell her about Jesus. Daunting, but a wonderful privilege.
However, in the context and seeing what happened to James and Paul I think my rose coloured spectacles had fallen down onto my nose and tinted my vision! James was thrown in prison by Herod and eventually killed. Paul was brought before Governors and Kings not as a guest but as a criminal on trial. Paul was a little unusual because he saw it as a privilege to witness for his Messiah, but I guess most of us would run from such an encounter given half the chance.
Tell me, as the bumper sticker asked, "If you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?" Well, would there?
I was so saddened a few years ago. I went to a neighbour's funeral. We had spoken a little and waved as we passed and they knew I worked for a Christian radio station, but when I got to the funeral and started listening to the eulogies I found out they were Christian. I didn't know they were Christian until I went to their funeral!
I pray that never happens to me! I want to be so "sold out" to Jesus that "they" take one look at me and "shoot" because they know a trial would be unnecessary because it would only prove what they already KNOW!
How about you? When will people know you are a Christian? When you are taken to court or before?
It's a good idea to get used to witnessing before you are required to do so before Governors and Kings!
